Incitement To Read Books

Fahrenheit 451, apparently not one of the books banned.

Fahrenheit 451, apparently not one of the books banned.

Potted summary:

Recently, the principal and school teacher council released a (very long) list of books we’re not allowed to read. I was absolutely appalled, because a large number of the books were classics and others that are my favorites … I  now operate a little mini-library that no one has access to but myself … Is it OK to run an illegal library from my locker at school?

Facts about this case are difficult to glean – I’ve been through Boing Boing, Xanthippa’s, wh00ps and Landed Underclass, unravelling the thread to the original Yahoo Answers post, with little extra information.

So don’t know if it’s true or not, don’t know where they are banning books and therefore have very little to add!

What? You wanted inciteful commentary? You’re in the wrong fuckin’ place!

  1. Xanthippa, May 27, 2009:

In my never-humble-opinion, the reason the facts are so scarce is because ‘everyone’ is trying to protect the ‘teen librarian’s’ identity.

After all, she’s risking being expelled from school if found out – and does not think that even her parents would support her actions. Scary…

    BUT…

Having seen VERY similar lists (the one I published is a partial) from OTHER schools in the US and Canada, I tend to believe her story.

A teacher-friend of mine once worked at a private Christian school in Ontario where EVERY book which even mentioned the word ‘magic’ or had ‘magical creatures’ like fairies OR talking animals in it was BANNED! She resigned after 1 year…

With ’schools’ like these, who needs thought police?
